School's Back In!

Australian students went back to school today for the new school year. It got me thinking, it is 20 years ago this week that I started my educational career.

Here I am at the grand old age of four on my first day of kindergarten!

I think I was a little bit nervous don't you?

The Golden Compass

We went to see The Golden Compass for my birthday back at the start of January. It was really good and it inspired me to read the books by Philip Pullman. I had read one of his books in high school (I think year 10?) when my Nanna sent it out from England, but it was from his series about Sally Lockhart. Anyway, the point is I have now read all three books in the Golden Compass series and I really enjoyed them. They are like the Harry Potter series in that they get you completely caught up in an alternative world (and I don't even like fantasy writing usually. They are very quick reads and, if you liked Harry Potter, you will like these!

Seeing Things!

We have had a lovely weekend here....beautiful clear skies and sunshine. Rather hot though....I know, always complaints.

On Saturday we went to see Carmen at the Opera House. This was my first ever opera experience. My husband was really keen to go, though I was a bit dubious. I was concerned that I would only enjoy the pieces of music that I knew from Best-of-Opera type CDs - and with a two and a half hour performance, I didn't think that would be a significant portion of the show! Actually, I found it really enjoyable. Opera Australia had two visiting artists from the US - Michael Todd Simpson (as Escamillo) and Kirsten Chavez (as Carmen) - both were brilliant. They cast was huge; with wonderful costuming. Oh, and the sets were superb as well. I think one of the highlights for me was when Escamillo, the torero, came onto the stage riding a horse and singing!

Yesterday (Sunday) we went to see Juno. Everything I have read about it in people's posts has been positive and it really lived up to my expectations. The patter between the characters was so witty and funny. If you haven't already gone, I would recommend it.

Anyway, we are lucky enough to have a long weekend as it was Australia Day on Saturday (with the public holiday given today in consequence). We have a relaxed day planned. I want to finish a couple of craft projects, finish a book and do some general puttering around the house. We are going to a BBQ for my cousin's husband's birthday tonight....there should be an opportunity for a swim. Yay!

Have a great day.

Can You Believe It?

I got to work this morning and logged on to the Sydney Morning Herald website to get my daily dose of breaking news. I was shocked to see that Heath Ledger had died. Now, I am not a big Heath Ledger fan or anything, but he is from my home town of Perth. I feel so sorry for his family and, particularly, his young daughter. It will be a really difficult time for them.

Anyway, onto a more cheery subject. It is a beautiful warm day here so on our return from work my husband and I wandered down to the shops (with the dogs) and treated ourselves to an icecream. This is something we rarely do (actually come to think of it I don't think we have ever done it previously), so a really nice treat. Anyhow, today is Wednesday and one of my favourite nights for TV. First I watch a Nigella Lawson Feast episode. Then the British TV shows My Family and The Complete Guide to Parenting. Both just so funny.

Well, I must fly - dinner to prepare; we are having stir-fry and Nigella starting in 10 minutes! Yikes!

Our Puppy Family

I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce any visitors to our puppies! They are looking particularly well groomed at present having just had their haircuts on the weekend. We got both dogs at the Pound and they were very scruffy when they arrived. They have just beautiful personalities.

First, our little girl Abby. She is a chihuahua maltese cross. Abby is very boisterous, she loves a cuddle and a run in the park.

Monty is our little boy. A maltese shitzu cross. He is a very peaceful chap when he is in the house but take him to the park or let him out in the backyard and he barks at everything! In terms of cuddles, his preference is to lie next to you, not on you.

Oh, and that blue bow in Monty's hair didn't last long. My husband said it didn't look very manly!

Welcome to My Blog!

I suppose a few words on what I intend to write about on this blog might be in order. In reality, I suspect it will be a mish-mash of going-ons in my life! So, what might you find here.....

Comments on the books I am reading. I love to read and it is fun to have an outlet to talk about them.

My sewing projects. There is a wonderful community of supportive crafters out there. I have been enjoying it from the sidelines for a while but now I would love to be part of it.

My life. As it happens. Moving. Military LIfe. Travel. Faith.

I don't know whether trying to capture all these different facets of my life on one site will work or it will be too much. Time can only tell. And with that, I look forward to starting the journey and sharing it with you.
